Happy Smiles

Happy Smiles is a not-for-profit constituted group, set up with the aim of improving social inclusion for people with additional and complex needs. Inspired by one of the young men I care for (Haydn), our purpose is to provide people with the opportunities to feel and be fully included in society, through an inclusive approach to education and training. We work to decrease the negative stigma attached to ‘disability’ and educate communities about what people can do.

We train people with perceived disabilities to become Inclusion Champions. As a trained Inclusion Champion, these young people will then have the opportunity to deliver training around disability awareness and social inclusion across their communities. We have already reached thousands of people online and delivered training in one of the top 100 schools in the country, as well as with various community groups. An example of this being training that we recently delivered around Dating and Relationships for young people with additional and complex needs with a local charity, Embrace Wigan & Leigh. Our impact across the various sectors has been evident in the feedback, with audience members describing our work as “a new way to see disability”, after just 20 minutes with us.
